Custom LED Module Order Process explained & Technical details:

Build Your Own Plug & Play Multicolor LED Modules, Made in Germany, with Nichia 757 LED series and dimensions from 150mm to 600mm in length and 5mm to 400mm in width, with rigid PCB.

Step 1: Order Quantity (pcs)

How many modules do you need.  While there is no MOQ, we recommend at least 50 meters.

Step 2: LED module dimensions (Length and Width)

The LED module must have the dimensions from 150mm to 600mm in length and 5mm to 400mm in width. The length of the rigid PCB has to be at least 150mm. For less, other order forms are available.  Shape of the PCB is rectangular.

Step 3: Multicolor LED Module Type

The type of LED module can be:

  • Tunable White: Warm-Cold White = 2 channel LED module
  • Tunable White: Warm-Cold-Neutral White = 3 channel LED module
  • Dynasolis: Azure+Warm White LED = 2 channel LED module
  • RGB: Red, Green, Blue = 3 channel LED module
  • RGB-W: RGB-Warm White = 4 channel LED module
  • RGBWW: RGB-Warm White-Cold White = 5 channel LED module

Step 4: Multicolor LED Configuration

A multicolor LED light module can have various LED configurations, based on the choice between single chip LEDs or multi-chip LEDs. Light output from single chip LEDs is significantly higher, while multi-chip LEDs make possible a more compact light system, with smooth colors. Here you can choose which types of LEDs you want to use, for RGB and/or the White light.

  • RGB LED light can be obtained from a combination of three color LEDs (Red, Green, Blue) or a LED with three LED Chips (3:1 RGB)
  • White Tunable LED Light can be obtained from a combination of two white LEDs (Warm White, Cold White) or a LED with two LED Chips (2:1 TW)

TW (Tunable-White) LED Configuration offers the following choices:

  • 2 in 1 TW (Warm-Cold White): one Nichia 2:1 TW LED
  • TW (Warm-Cold White): one warm white LED, one cold white LED
  • Dynasolis (Azure-Warm White): one azure LED and one warm white LED
  • TW (Warm-Neutral-Cold White): one warm white LED, one pure white LED, one cold white LED*

RGB LED configuration (Dynamic-Special Color LED Type) offers the following choices:

  • Osram RGB 3:1, one LED with three colors
  • Nichia 757 LEDs, one for each color

  • 3 in 1 RGB-W (Warm White): one Osram RGB 3:1 with three colors,
  • RGB-CW (Cold White):
  • 3 in 1 RGB-CW (Cold White): one Osram RGB 3:1 with three colors, one cold white LED

  • 3 in 1 RGB - 2 in 1 TW: one Osram RGB 3:1, one Nichia 2:1 TW LED
  • RGB - 2 in 1 TW:
  • 3 in 1 RGB-W-CW: one Osram RGB 3:1, one warm white LED, one cold white LED
  • RGB-WW: one warm white LED, one cold white LED

Step 5: Dynamic-Special Color LED Type

The dynamic-special color component of the module can be built with:

1) Osram RGB 3:1 DISPLIX LED, with all colors inside:

  • Red (612-630 nm)
  • True Green (513-545 nm)
  • Blue (450-480 nm)

2) Nichia Azure Dynasolis, a LED solution that regulates circadian rhythms by simultaneously adjusting melanopic illuminance1 and color temperature while maintaining high CRI and high efficacy.

3) A pair of three Red, Green and Blue LEDs from the latest generation Nichia 757 COLOR LED series, the industry leading 3030 Mid-power LEDs. The 757 LED series have industry's highest luminous efficacy (up to 222 lm/w) and reliability (up to 100.000h L70 lifetime). Each LED has a typical consumption of 0.2W at 65mA, for a luminous flux up to 45 lm.

Click here to see current Nichia color LED line-up.

Nichia 757 Color LEDs include:

  • BLUE: 465nm peak**
  • GREEN: 515nm peak**
  • RED: 635nm peak**

**See Nichia LED spectrum.

4) NF2W757G-MT (Tunable White): Nichia's 2-in-1 Tunable White LED, developed to emit and control the two color temperatures out of an LED's single light-emitting surface.  With CRI80 or 90

The datasheet will specify the LED part number.

5) Osram RGB 3:1 + Nichia TW 2:1 LEDs, for the complete color and white spectrum at CRI80 or 90.

Step 6: White LED Color temperature

Different color temperatures create different visual effects and are appropriate for different environments. Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) on a scale from 'warm' to 'cool': The 'warmer' the light, the lower the number of Kelvin. The 'cooler' the light, the higher the number of Kelvin. You can read more about the recommended color temperature for a project in our blog.

For warm, neutral or cold white, various color temperature choices are available.

Step 7: White LED CRI and Special Type

The white light component of the module, with single chip LEDs,  can be built with:

1) The latest generation Nichia white 757 LED series, the industry leading 3030 Mid-power LEDs. The 757 LED series have industry's highest luminous efficacy (up to 222 lm/w) and reliability (up to 100.000h L70 lifetime). Each LED has a typical consumption of 0.2W at 65mA, for a luminous flux up to 45 lm.

Click here to see the current Nichia line-up.

Special Nichia 757 LED types include:

  • Optisolis 757 & CRI99: LEDs with a spectrum close to natural light, CRI99, R9 minimum 85
  • H6 757 Series & CRI90: LEDs that achieve a color quality better than traditional LEDs (Ra≥90, R9≥50, R15≥85) while maintaining an efficacy better than Ra≥80 LEDs.
  • Vitasolis 757 Series & CRI80: Vitasolis LEDs emit a natural white color with a high content of blue-green energy proven to stimulate awakening and supports a vibrant life.

*Not all color temperatures are available for every LED type or CRI.  The datasheet will specify Nichia LED part number.

2) The full spectrum option, CRI95+ Seoul Semiconductor 3030 SunLike LEDs.

Step 8: LED Quantity per Module for Each Color (pcs)

The LED Quantity per Module for each color (pcs). The module will have an equal number of LEDs for all colors/channels. For example, for the choices of LED Quantity per Module for Each Color = 60 and LED module Type = Dynasolis,  the module will have 60 + 60 = 120 LEDs in total.

We recommend that the total number of LEDs that will be used to build your custom module to be as close as possible to a multiple of 5000 for each color.

Step 9: LED Module PCB Material & Quality

The LED module can have a FR-4 PCB, the choice for most LED module designs.

There are 3 quality levels:

  • Economy PCB FR4: 1 PCB layer, 1mm PCB Material thickness, 1 oz PCB Copper thickness
  • Best Value PCB FR4: 2 PCB layers, 1.6mm PCB Material thickness, 1 oz PCB Copper thickness
  • Premium PCB FR4: 2 PCB layers, 1.6mm PCB Material thickness, 1.6 oz PCB Copper thickness

PCB has the following standard characteristics: White solder mask, black silk screen. HAL lead free surface finishing. Minimum trace spacing 0.2mm. Min hole size: 0.3mm. Minimum component spacing: 0.5mm. Minimum border spacing: 0.5mm

Step 10: LED Module Forward Voltage (V)

To power a LED module and external power supply is required, that will ensure it receives the recommended current and voltage.  Without it, the current in the LEDs will rise exponentially with the applied voltage, as a small change in voltage leads to a large change in current, until the maximum current is reached and the module burns up.

The external power supply can be a 12/24/48VDC constant voltage power supply or a 175-1400mA constant current LED driver.

  • 12/24/48VDC Constant Voltage Power Supply

You can choose the LED module to be built with a current regulation mode so it can function with constant voltage transformers for 12VDC, 24VDC or 48VDC. For this purpose, the LEDs will be placed in series, with the current regulation component after each group:

  • 12VDC (3 LEDs in series + current regulation component)
  • 24VDC (7 LEDs in series + current regulation component)
  • 48VDC (15 LEDs in series + current regulation component)

The Current Regulation component can be a simple resistor for Best Value Mode or a linear regulator for Premium Mode. The latter is recommended to achieve the maximum lifetime of the LEDs module.

For any of the options above, the total number of LEDs on the module has to be divisible by the number of LEDs in series. For example, for 24VDC you can have a 500mm LED module with 35 LEDs but not with 30 LEDs. We will adjust your order if this is not the case.

The LED module can be built to function at a standard constant current value, with choices in the range 175mA to 1400mA. You may choose one of the recommended values, as many drivers options are available for these. Alternately, you can leave to our recommendation.

The Current Regulation component can be a simple resistor for Best Value Mode or a linear regulator for Premium Mode. The latter is recommended to achieve the maximum lifetime of the LEDs module.

In all cases, we will also recommend and can supply the LED drivers or transformers for your project.

For a project with large quantities of LED modules/strip connected in long rows, a constant voltage 24VDC circuit design is the best solution. For projects that require individual transformers for short rows of LED modules, constant current design is the better option, the shorter rows are. In general, for 2 meters or fewer per transformer, a constant current LED design is the best choice.

Step 11: Electrical Connection Type

The connection between the LED Module(s) and the ECG (electronic control gear, transformer, dimmer, driver) has to be made by cable, with or without connectors. The connectors can be on the surface of the LED Module PCB or at the end of cable(s). Connections without connectors can be made by soldering the cables to the solder pads.
  • Solder Pads: the LED module will have 2 pairs of Solder Pads at each end, for + / - ... - connection. For LED modules with cutting unit, the 2 pairs will be present at each end of the cutting unit.
  • Surface Connection: the LED module will have 2 pairs of Plug-in connectors at each end, for + / - ... - connection. For LED modules with cutting unit, the other connections points will be solder pads. The Plug-in connectors allow the cable with 18AWG...26AWG to be connected without using a soldering iron.
  • Wire connection: The LED module can be built with a +/- ...- wire at one or both ends, with your specified length. We recommend 50cm/19.6" maximum as to avoid voltage drop.

The multicolor LED module will have electrical circuits for each channel, with the positive being shared and the negative individual for each channel.

Step 12: Samples Required?

You may request to receive samples, when you order or receive the datasheet. This option has an extra cost and adds to the total delivery time of your order. Details will be provided at the time we receive your request. The maximum number of samples is 5 pcs.

Step 13: Scope of Delivery

The order process and online payment can be made for the full Order Quantity (pcs) or for drawing, design or samples. Based on your choice, the scope of delivery and the payment will be:

  • Order Quantity (pcs): the full quantity entered at step 1, including drawing, design and samples.
  • Design and Samples Only: Drawing, Design and 5 samples of maximum 50 cm each, for the Flexible LED strip with the specifications from the order.
  • Drawing Only: The drawing of the LED strips, including:

- Dimensional drawing, with position of the LEDs, solder pads, current regulation components, printed information of the PCB.

- Summary of the main characteristics (technical data of the cutting unit), including:  dimensions, operation mode, voltage, current, power, color temperature, luminous flux, efficiency, CRI, LED type.

- PCB information: base material, layers, copper.

Step 14: Advanced Options

If you have the design of your LED module already made in detail or have special requirements, then we recommend filling the relevant details in the ADVANCED OPTIONS section. Only fill in the fileds relevant for you. You can also provide this information via email, in the Design validation stage.

  • Your part number: We can print your own part number that you fill, on the PCB of the LED strip, maximum length 10 characters. It will be printed in addition to the information required by European Union law: manufacturer, manufacturer part number, relevant technical information (such as voltage, current, color temperature, luminous flux, TC), CE, ROSH, Recycling logo.
  • Cutting unit: We can build your LED module or strip with the option to be cut to size, but only at designated points on the strip. The distance, is known as cutting unit. If your desired choice is not possible due to technical limitations (such as the number of LEDs in series / parallel), we will inform you in the design stage.
  • LED pitch: distance between center point of each LED in mm.
  • How many LEDs per Row: for LED modules with more than one row.
  • LED row pitch: for LED modules with more than one row, the LED row pitch is the distance between the center point of each row of LEDs, in mm.
  • LED Module max. row length (m): Many projects require multiple LED modules/strips to be powered together in a line. This information can help to properly design the PCB of the LED module.

The advanced options should not change the characteristics of the LED module and/or the order value.

OPTIONAL: Upload Files (after order is made):

Upload files: If you have specific design requirements for the custom LED module or strip, that does not change the characteristics of the LED module, you may upload them from the upload section or from the page at this link. Accepted files are PDF, Gerber, PCB file. We accept Zip, Rar format, maximum 10MB for all files. Only upload these files after you complete your order! Your order number and email address are required.
